Box.net Makes Content Management More Social

Social media is all the rage these days; even Twitter, with its complete lack of a business plan, was able to raise $35 million in the midst of our recession. So it seems to be a smart choice on Box.net's part to give the latest version of its content management system a social side.

A look at the official feature list makes the new software sound almost like a business-oriented version of Facebook. First, employees will have profile pages that give "[i]nformation about their role and current projects as well as contact information (email, phone number, and a picture)." And these pages also share "[t]heir latest activity: what content they've most recently edited, commented, or discussed."

Then there's a layout that allows for discussions and bookmarking. Users will even be able to see who's sharing a given file, which should help team members remain aware of and in contact with each other. Imagine employees being able to easily work from home, or clients across the country getting a good look at what's going on.

More standard features will be included, too, of course. Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box.net, explained in a statement, "We're taking what we have - a secure, intuitive content management tool - and enhancing and building upon that connection between people."

A Lite version of the software is available for free, while on the other end of the scale, the Business version can be had for $15 per user per month.
